Taken during Portland's first "Fleet Week", this view shows the destroyer Reuben James and other Navy ships in front of the City's downtown business district. 18 Naval ships attended for what has become a key part of the annual Rose Festival.
While some Navy ships have attended the festival since its 1907 beginnings, it was in 1936 that the Navy began a more formal support of the annual festivities. There are currently annual Navy fleet weeks in a handful of U.S. cities. Portland's festivities usually include naval ships from the United States and Canada, as well as U.S. Coast Guard vessels.
