The "J. N. Teal" docks at a primitive landing on the Columbia River, probably at the town of Arlington.
The "J. N. Teal" docks at a primitive landing on the Columbia River, probably at the town of Arlington. I wonder if these are new cars being delivered to the townspeople. About 1911 is when cars started to make their way into eastern Oregon.
Joseph N. Teal, for whom the ship was named, was the chairman of the Oregon Conservation Commission, and a leader in the public movement for the building of the Dalles-Celilo canal. When it opened in 1915, he gave the dedication speech, and his sternwheeler namesake was given the honor of being the first ship to pass through the canal, making the first continuous trip from Portland to Lewiston, Idaho.
