The sandstone arch known as Jump Off Joe was a popular tourist destination near Newport, and was often photographed.
The sandstone arch known as Jump Off Joe was a popular tourist destination near Newport, and was often photographed. This version is by Albert L. Thomas, who maintained a jewelry and photography business in Newport. Ocean waves wore away the soft sandstone, and by 1916 the arch had collapsed. Nothing is left of it today.
On the other hand, the Yaquina Head Lighthouse, seen in the distance, still stands, though its outbuildings were demolished in 1984.
