We're looking upstream at Tooth Rock Viaduct, devised as a way to allow the new scenic highway to pass around the rock without destroying it by blasting. It was the goal of Samuel Lancaster, the highway's designer, to lay out the road to best feature the scenic beauty of the Columbia Gorge.
While this section of the highway was bypassed in 1936, it has recently been reopened to pedestrians and bicycle traffic.
