Thomas & Sophia Charman, Wedding Photo B - 1854
Reproduced from a rare Joseph Buchtel daguerreotype. According to a note in its case, the original photo was taken on September 27, 1854, the day after Thomas and Sophia were married in Oregon City.
Daguerreotypes were the first commercially available type of photo, and Joseph Buchtel was one of the first daguerreotype photographers in Oregon, resuming here in 1853 a craft he learned in Illinois in 1851. The process involved creating an image on a layer of silver on a piece of glass. Each photo was unique - there was no negative. The photos were fragile, and thus were almost always packaged in ornate cases with a folding front to cover them.
Thomas and Sophia Charman went on to become important citizens of Oregon City, where Thomas served several terms as mayor.
