Dr. John McLoughlin, often called "The Father of Oregon", needs little introduction to history buffs. The Canadian-born Chief Factor of the Hudson's Bay Company at Fort Vancouver, he resigned in 1846 and moved to Oregon City where he became an American citizen.
Dr. John McLoughlin, often called "The Father of Oregon", needs little introduction to history buffs. The Canadian-born Chief Factor of the Hudson's Bay Company at Fort Vancouver, he resigned in 1846 and moved to Oregon City where he became an American citizen.
Despite all the support he had given to early American settlers, his property was taken from him by a rider on the U.S. Donation Land Claim Act, and was not returned till after his death in 1857.
This image is taken from an 1860s small-format CDV photograph, which was itself a copy of an earlier image. I'm still researching the source of the original image, and would appreciate any information you might provide.
