George Law Curry, born in Philadelphia in 1820, first entered the newspaper trade as an eleven-year-old printer apprentice in Boston. After publishing the St. Louis paper The Reveille from 1842 to 1845, he moved to Oregon City, where due to his experience he was chosen by George Abernathy to edit the Oregon Spectator.
Entering government work as a clerk in 1850, he became the only person to serve on three separate occasions as Oregon's governor -- all when Oregon was still a territory. He married his neighbor Chloe Boone, great-granddaughter of Daniel Boone, and lived most of his adult life in Clackamas County.
