This nicely composed view of Yaquina Head Lighthouse was created by Newport photographer Albert Thomas in about 1910. Built in 1873, the lighthouse is named after its location - a narrow point of land jutting due west nearly one mile into the Pacific Ocean, north of Newport.
The two-story building in detail view 1 was the lighthouse keeper's house, which was removed in 1984. The lighthouse still functions, though its oil-burning wicks have been replaced by an automatic 1000 watt bulb that flashes on and off twenty-four hours a day.
