Five elder drummers play for the worship dance before the meal is served at the Feast of the First Salmon, April 22, 1945.
Despite shortages of gasoline and rations in the last half-year of World War II, almost 400 people -- more than expected -- came for the ancient thanksgiving ceremony. The event was held in the longhouse at Celilo Village, on the Oregon side of Celilo Falls.
