Fort Canby at Cape Disappointment, on the Washington Territory side of the mouth of the Columbia River.
Fort Canby at Cape Disappointment, on the Washington side of the mouth of the Columbia. A lighthouse was built at Cape Disappointment in 1856, and cannons added in 1862; neither are visible in this photo.
In 1875, the fort was expanded and named for General Edward Canby, who was killed in a battle with the Modocs in northern California in 1873. This photograph was made about 10 years later. Note the two-piece flagpole in detail 2, possibly fashioned from a ship's mast.
