This photo of Cape Disappointment's lighthouse and cannon was taken by Eadweard Muybridge in spring of 1871, when he was hired by the Lighthouse Board to photograph lighthouses from Washington Territory to San Diego. For this contract, he was paid twenty dollars per day - a goodly amount in those days.
Based in San Francisco, Muybridge is best know for his series of motion studies, and is sometimes called "the father of motion pictures". Built in 1856, the lighthouse is the oldest operating lighthouse on the west coast. The cannons were added in 1862.
