In this 1949 snapshot, Duane Davis (holding the reins) and Jay Dunwoodie guide Clarabelle the burro down Eighth Avenue in the Willamette neighborhood of West Linn. Clarabelle worked at Oaks Park in Sellwood, but during the off season she boarded at the Dunwoodies' 8 acres, near where the 10th Street exit now sits.
Jay recalls cutting the ear holes for Clarabelle's hat, and using two different types of wheels for their cart - which gave it the tendency to always move to one side. The road leading away from Eight Avenue is the end of 12th Street.
