A beautiful matched team pulls this early Red Cross ambulance, paused for a photo somewhere in Portland in 1910.
The Red Cross first provided ambulance service to the military in 1898 in the Spanish American War, and after that conflict provided ambulances in many American cities.
This was before commercial services began, which in Portland meant the Oregon Ambulance Company, started in 1913, which later became known as the Buck Ambulance Company, which in the 1990s was bought out by American Medical Response.
