Chief Charlot, Salish - 1907
Charlot was head chief of the Bitterroot Salish, sometimes known as the Flatheads, from the time of his father's death in 1870 until his own death in 1910. This photo was taken by an unknown photographer in 1907 during the visit of Secretary of Interior James R. Garfield, who had come to negotiate the opening of the Flathead Reservation in Montana to white settlement.
This was a result of the 1904 Flathead Allotment Act passed by Congress, and opposed by Charlot. Charlot was quoted as saying, "You all know that I won't sell a foot of land. You had better hunt some people who want money more than we do." After this visit, Charlot became dispirited, and others picked up the resistance. But three months after Charlot's death, homesteaders poured into the Jocko and Mission valleys.
