When I first saw this photo, titled by the photographer, "Town View Looking Upstream", I took it as an idylic view of a successful town along the waterfront.
When I first saw this photo, titled by the photographer, "Town View Looking Upstream", I took it as an idylic view of a successful town along the waterfront. It took a few moments before I noticed the buildings along the shore were half-submerged in the flooded Columbia River.
The 1894 flood depicted here is known for the highest water flow ever measured in the Columbia - 1,230,000 cubic feet per second - over six times the average annual flow.
