Looking towards the swollen Columbia River, from the residential district into the flooded commercial district, during the record-setting June, 1894 flood.
Looking towards the swollen Columbia River, from the residential district into the flooded commercial district, during the record-setting June, 1894 flood. This view gives us not only a feeling for the unfortunate effects of the flood, especially on the commercial buildings, but also shows us the well-kept houses, yards and outbuildings of the town, mostly above the effects of the rising water.
Electricity had come to town in 1888. The building with the smokestack near the middle of the photo (see detail view 2) is the wood-burning electric plant, which had been moved to this location at First and Loughlin in 1892.
