Locals gather for the second annual Grant County Fair, started in 1909 on land donated by the Trowbridge family to the Agricultural Society, for the purpose of holding an annual fair and race meet. Located just north of downtown John Day, the fairgrounds have grown in size and in the number of events held there.
Today you'll find activities every month of the year, from the Oregon State Snowmobilers' Convention to the Grant County Quilt Show. In 1910, the fair may have been smaller, but you can still see in this photo a young man getting ready for a horse race, a band performing in a makeshift shelter, and a group of women and their daughters taking it all in.
