Steam Tug and Tall Ships in Portland Harbor - c. 1900

The combination of steam tug and sailing vessels in this softly-photographed scene is not coincidence; steam tugboats often assisted the larger sailing ships to and from the docks in the Portland harbor.

While we don't know the name of the photographer, we are confident this is a professional photo, as the number "535" is inscribed in the lower left corner of the original print. We are looking downstream in the industrial area, with the west hills peeking through the fog to the left.
