Built during the Civil War to protect the mouth of the Columbia, the garrison buildings for what was initially called Fort Cape Disappointment were located on the protected bay side of of the southern end of Long Beach Peninsula.
Built during the Civil War to protect the mouth of the Columbia, the garrison buildings for what was initially called Fort Cape Disappointment were located on the protected bay side of of the southern end of Long Beach Peninsula. Three batteries of cannons were situated on the ocean side, to repel any potential attackers.
The fort was renamed for General Edward Canby in 1875. Some remnants of the original fortifications still exist today, but the garrison buildings shown here have all disappeared.
