Three unidentified men stand on the front steps of the newly completed courthouse in 1898.
Three unidentified men stand on the front steps of the newly completed courthouse in 1898. A pile of dirt still sits near the entrance, and what appears to be left-over lumber is piled in the shadows in the lower right.
The rather unusual all-wood courthouse reflects Coos County's position as a major lumber port. Architectural details remind us that they "don't build 'em like this anymore." The December 20, 1898 issue of the Coquille City Herald reported that this photo was "very fine", and was on sale in several city stores.
