Swan Island was the site of Portland's first airport, dedicated a few years before this photo by Charles Lindberg in 1927, and operating until 1940. Lindberg's dedication actually occurred before the airport was operational, and the facility was not fully completed until 1930, about the time this photo was taken.
Due to the rapid growth of aviation and the limitations of the site, by 1935 plans were already being made to move the airport to its current location.
