Published in Harper's Weekly in June of 1869, this fanciful view of wagon train life features a group of horses running through the circle of covered wagons. The group in the lower left looks concerned, apparently about a sick infant in the lap of the seated woman.
Many children and infants (as well as some adults) did die on the Trail from Cholera in the late 1840s and early 1850s.
