The buildings seen here were all built after the great fire of 1889. The Tlingit totem pole was essentially stolen from Alaska by businessmen and placed in the plaza in 1899.

(Seattle finally paid for the totem pole in the 1930s.) The wrought-iron Victorian pergola and the bust of Chief Seattle were added in 1909.
