Bonneville Dam, Columbia River - 1939

Ralph Eddy was fascinated with the interplay between built structures like bridges and dams, and the natural environment where they were placed. This view shows the Bonneville Dam shortly after it was completed in 1937.

The lower half of the photograph shows the pool and weir fish ladder built as part of the project. This type of fish ladder is one of the oldest styles, using a series of small dams and pools of regular length to create a long, sloping channel for fish to travel around the obstruction
