High lead logging, using a spar pole, became common in the Pacific Northwest in the 1920s. Soon the pole was adapted to help load railroad cars with logs for the mills.
Whether used for bringing cut logs into the yard or loading railroad cars, the cables on spar poles were powered by wood-fired steam donkeys, shown here in detail view 2. The pole itself was initially a strategically placed tree, which was limbed and topped and used as a support for pulleys guiding the cables.
