The Pinnacles are spires of eroded rock, located at the confluence of Sand Creek and Wheeler Creek. Some are as much as 200 feet high.
They were formed when gas escaping through vertical cracks cemented loose pumice into vertical tubes - able to resist further erosion, unlike the surrounding materials. The Pinnacles are, in essence, fossilized fumaroles. They are also pretty spectacular.
