In 1890 or so, when this view was created, Bradford's Island was better known than now. Fort Cascades, which was nearby protecting the foot of the Cascades, was burned to the ground during an attack in 1856. The island was a favorite location for commercial fishing for many years. Today it is covered by the lake behind Bonneville Dam.
