The "Buchtel & Stolte" imprint on the original cabinet card dates this image to between 1875 through 1878, a few years before Dolph was first elected to the U. S. Senate in 1882. Born in Dolphsburg, New York in 1835, he spent ten years in the Oregon Senate before beginning his two terms in the national senate.
A lawyer, Dolph returned to private practice after leaving the U. S. Senate in 1895, and was known for representing transportation magnates Ben Holliday and Henry Villard.
