George Law Curry, a publisher and jewelry maker, served as Oregon Territory's governor on three different occasions. Appointed to the post after Joseph Lane returned to Congress in 1853, Curry also stepped in when John W. Davis resigned in 1854. He was then officially appointed to the position by President Pierce, which he held until Oregon statehood in 1859.
This photo was printed by Joseph Buchtel in 1879, shortly after Curry's death on July 28, 1878, at the age of 58. We don't know precisely when it was taken, but it appears to be from the 1860s.
