In this photo of an early Portland flood, pioneer photographer Joseph Buchtel is standing at the corner of First and Pine, facing northeast. There are 2 structures in the image that survive today - the New Market Theater built in 1872 and the New Market Block built in 1871. The two wooden structures - the Steilacoom Lager Beer Depot and Oregon Bakery - are long gone.
