This image of perhaps the best known wreck on Oregon's treacherous coast was captured by Portland photographer Harry Bartels shortly after the ship ran aground in October 1906. Detail view 1 shows some of the canvas still in place on the third of four masts. Detail view 2 shows the crack in the hull.
Hundreds of ships were lost near the mouth of the Columbia. The Iredale is well-known mostly because remnants of its hull are still visible over a hundred years later.
