If you have both water and gravity, a flume is an ideal way to move logs or lumber from the top to the bottom of a hill.
If you have both water and gravity, a flume is an ideal way to move logs or lumber from the top to the bottom of a hill.
For this mill, lumber was cut to rough dimensions at Palmer at the top of the hill, and then sent down the flume to the planing mill at Bridal Veil, where after additional processing it was loaded on the railroad near the Columbia River. You can see timbers arriving near the bottom of the flume, spraying water as they move along.
