The magazine, then in its fifteenth year, was published in Portland by L. Samuel, and described itself on its masthead as "An Illustrated Journal Published Weekly". W. H. Byrnes, the engraver, appears to have had a fondness for large eyes, as shown by several of his characters, especially the young girl in detail view 1.
