Tule reeds have been gathered at the edges of lakes for millennia along the pacific coast, from northern California to British Columbia. The woman in this Curtis photo is Cowichan, from British Columbia, but her work is typical of that taking place throughout the Pacific Northwest.
Dried and woven, tule has traditionally have been used for making everything from baskets to hats to canoes. Woven into mats it was used as a covering for northwest versions of the teepee.
