Oregon City's Main Street, showing the electric trolley and a multitude of new electric power lines.
This view of Oregon City's Main Street was taken in the 1890s, shortly after electrification and the arrival of the electric trolley. Electricity had come to town in the late 1880s, and the East Side Railway, represented here by the car "Rose", began its run between Oregon City and Portland in 1893.
We can see in detail 1 the driver of the streetcar cleaning and opening the switch to allow the car to proceed. Detail 2 shows that one or two horse power per vehicle was still the established norm.
