This image of petroglyphs was captured by Benjamin Markham in Petroglyph Canyon on the north side of the Columbia River. The high contrast of the drawing is from chalking that was often done by early photographers so designs would show up better.
When Petroglyph Canyon was submerged by The Dalles Dam in the 1950s, part of this image was removed and relocated to the Temani Peshwa Trail at Columbia Hills State Park, where it can be seen today.
