This unidentified young woman from The Dalles displays a beautiful beaded leather bag - perhaps created by her own hands. According to the Portland Art Museum's catalog for the "People of the River" exhibition, bags like this were first created in the 1850s, and were carried as a purse, though their purpose was more decorative than utilitarian.
The stylized floral pattern shown here became popular in the 1860s, and was intended to depict a living plant, with the stems, leaves and flowers all radiating from a single point as if the plant were growing.
