In 1914 the Oregon Eastern Railroad was extending its line from Riverside over the hills to the town of Crane, east of Burns in the Harney Valley. This view shows how they built the grade. Four mule teams and their handlers are visible, moving dirt the old-fashioned way.
The workers' camp can be seen in the two detail views, and either a stream or a small lake is off to the right of the construction site.
Photographer A. D. Browning owned a sign painting business in Crane, but also produced a large number of real photo postcards of local scenery.
