Periods of Time - 1902
We've placed the location of this photo as somewhere along the Columbia River, though we are not sure where. Lily White, the photographer, based her activities on her houseboat Raysark, which she moved up and down the Columbia with her friend and fellow photographer Sarah Hall Ladd.
While both were considered amateurs, they devoted much time to their photography, and White was known for teaching other members of the Oregon Camera Club techniques and technologies. She created an influential body of work, combining Native American portraits like this with scenic views.
In this view of a grandmother (great-grandmother?) and infant, the purpose of White's title is clear. A fun note is added by the beads and decoration for the cradle board, not unlike the crib toys many of us had at that age.
