The Pendleton Hose Team at the 1897 Eastern Oregon and Washington Firemen's Tournament at Baker City. Detail views show Captain C. O. White, and the team's female "mascot", Adel Pefferle.
"Firemen's tournaments included tests of speed with equipment. The hook and ladder company pulled its gear from a standing start to a given point, usually one hundred yards away, raised the ladder to maximum height, and placed a man on the top rung. In one tournament the Pendleton lads performed the operation in 28 2/5 seconds."
