This 90-year old view of Mt. St. Helens is recreated from an original hand-tinted magic lantern slide, based on a photograph by Asahel Curtis. In the 1920s, the area was moving from a mining area into a focus on recreation. A new road was completed in 1927 that made the lake much more accessible for tourists. The U. S. Forest Service at this time limited the use of the lake perimeter to six established camps.
Today the area formerly managed by the Spirit Lake Ranger District is part of the Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument.
