In a scene familiar to many of us, Mrs. Botner checks a box of rhubarb on the floor of her storage cellar in Nyssa Heights, Malheur County, Oregon. According to photographer Dorothea Lange, Mrs. Botner had put up over 800 quarts of food for the winter.
Recently arrived in Oregon seeking better farming conditions, the Botners had made great strides towards providing food for themselves. However, Mrs. Botner added, "I miss my chickens so, but we're just not fixed for chickens or hogs yet."
