Timberline Lodge's first chairlift, the Magic Mile, opened in late 1939 - almost two years after the lodge itself. (The original rope tow stayed in service for several years.) At the time, it was the longest chairlift in existence, and only the second in the world to be built as a passenger chairlift.
The lighthearted group shown here is admiring one of its towers, apparently before the cable and chairs had been installed.
