This early view shows three of Portland's bridges across the Willamette, all of which have been replaced since the photo was created in 1898. Note that all three are swing-span bridges, where a channel towards the west side can be opened by pivoting one span of the bridge.
The closest is the Madison Bridge, now called the Hawthorne Bridge, built in 1891. The current bridge was built in 1910. The second is the Morrison Bridge - Portland's first bridge across the Willamette, built in 1887. The third is the original Burnside Bridge, which opened in 1894.
