Details

Log drivers helped maneuver log rafts down rivers to sawmills. Here a group poses in front of their wanigan, a floating kitchen that accompanied them on their journey. Note the cook dressed in white - third from the left. Not all wanigans included steam donkeys like this one. The donkey, a steam powered winch, could be used for recovering from log jams that sometimes occurred when moving large quantities of logs down narrow rivers.
