John Denny, his sons Arthur and David, and their families traveled the Oregon Trail to the Willamette Valley in 1851. Along the way, Arthur became convinced that the Puget Sound area was where he wanted to settle.
The family was from Cherry Grove, Illinois, where John Denny had served as a fellow Whig with Abraham Lincoln in the Illinois state legislature. All of the family did end up on the Puget Sound. Arthur is the son known most today as the founder of Seattle, staking his claim along with William Bell and Carson Boren on the east side of Elliott Bay.
