This dramatic night-time photo of the new Oregon capitol was taken by postcard photographer Ralph Eddy in 1940, two years after the building was completed. It was built to replace Oregon's second capitol, which stood from 1876 till 1935, when it was destroyed by fire.
The first building created as Oregon's state capitol also burned, just as it was being finished in 1855. From that time till 1876 capitol functions were located in the Nesmith Building in downtown Salem.
