This photo was taken shortly after the north jetty for Yaquina Bay was completed in 1896, after 8 years of construction. Originally at a length of 2,300 feet, the jetty proved to be too short to keep sand from accumulating at the mouth of the bay, and local businessmen were soon lobbying to have it extended.
Due to the need for more water depth to accommodate larger ships, and the need to repair periodic damage from Pacific storms, the jetty has been repaired and extended many times - in 1921-1925, 1933-1934, 1939-1940, 1956-1957, and 1964 and 1967.
