Looking upstream along the Tooth Bridge on the 5-mile-long portage railroad on the Oregon side of the Cascade Rapids.
Looking upstream along the Tooth Bridge on the 5-mile-long portage railroad on the Oregon side of the Cascade Rapids. Opened in 1858 using mule power, but upgraded to steam engines in 1862, this was Oregon's first railroad. A careful look at detail view 2 shows that mules were still in use in 1867, at least to pull the wagon of a maintenance crew.
