This group of Salvation Army Corps members was photographed by William Snodgrass, who had his studio in Astoria. We're assuming they were based in that city. Three of the women wear hats labeled Salvation Army, and other members wear badges, pins with the letter "S", and other identifying clothing.
Founded in Great Britain in the 1870s, the Salvation Army reached Oregon by the 1880s. Their mission was to the poor and outcast, and they worked with fishermen and cannery workers in Astoria.
